Online searches related to short-term rentals for US snowbirds are showing a moderate 14% drop in interest as compared to 2019. However, winter relocation plans are still on the table for retirees — who traditionally make up the bulk of the snowbirding population. They are now joined by a growing number of remote workers.
For the people still planning to migrate this season, the research team at STORAGECafe put together an in-depth analysis of the best destinations for sun lovers, under the current circumstances. Texas stands out as the most budget-friendly housing market for snowbirds.
Here are some more interesting findings from our study:
- Texas can pride itself on having 17 cities in the top 100 best destinations — Winter Texans are already making the escape from colder climates.
- Corpus Christi, the best-placed Texan city in our top 100, ranked 9th nationwide. The proportion of vacant housing units for seasonal use is the lowest among these first ten cities – just 18%. However, Corpus Christi has more than a dozen RV and motorhome parks in and around the city.
- The most affordable snowbird location is Brownsville, Texas, with an average rent of $730, followed by Harlingen and McAllen, with average rents of $745 and $777, respectively.
- With 38 courses available, Houston ranked the best golfing destination.
- Other Texas cities made the list: Austin took number 39 on our list and Mission — one of the snowbird hotspots in the state of Texas — took 42nd place overall.
- The most popular states of origin for Texas snowbirds are Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan— and even North Texas residents — based on the volume of snowbird-related online searches from the states of origin.
