This July, the cities of McAllen and Edinburg, Texas, are set to host an exhilarating event that will unite softball enthusiasts from around the globe. The PONY International Softball World Series is not just a tournament; it’s a celebration of youth, diversity, and the power of community. Spearheaded by the dynamic team at the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen BRAND Center.
During the press conference, Mark Magnon, Board President of the Boys and Girls Club, extended a heartfelt welcome to all attendees, emphasizing the significant impact of the Boys and Girls Club’s programs, which cater to over 18,000 children in the area. Special thanks were given to the Louisiana PONY delegation, highlighting the event’s wide-reaching support.
Dalinda Alcantar Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Club Brand Center in McAllen, expressed her excitement about the tournament’s global participation. With over 190 teams from across the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Europe, McAllen is honored to host a diverse array of athletes and supporters. This year, the U.S. Pony South Zone delegation has again entrusted McAllen with this prestigious event, recognizing the city’s proven capability and warm hospitality.
PONY: More Than a Game
PONY, which stands for Protecting Our Nation’s Youth, is more than just a sports organization. It is a commitment to nurturing young talents and providing them with opportunities to grow on and off the field. The local Boys and Girls Club has been a significant partner, integrating PONY’s mission into its comprehensive programming to benefit the youth of McAllen.
The tournament is expected to be a boon for local businesses, with many players, families, and fans patronizing hotels, restaurants, and other establishments. This surge will boost the local economy and reinforce the importance of community-oriented events in fostering economic development.
Dalinda detailed the tournament’s logistics, noting that games would be played at various top-notch facilities, including West Side Park, Bicentennial Park, and the McAllen Youth Baseball Complex. The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 17th at McAllen ISD, with round-the-clock games to follow, ensuring that the thrill of competition is non-stop.
The event has garnered significant support from local sponsors, including Buffalo Wild Wings. It has led to substantial improvements in regional facilities, like a new Boys and Girls Club Brand Center gym floor. The proceeds from the tournament will provide unrestricted funds to support and expand the Club’s valuable work, reaching even more children and teens throughout McAllen and beyond.
