The caller is requesting credit card information up front for a sponsorship

The City of McAllen is asking the public to be on alert for scam phone calls from someone who claims they’re from the “McAllen Marathon” and requesting immediate payment for t-shirts.
Three companies supporting the race were targeted this week and reported that the callers immediately requested secure credit card information in order to purchase a sponsorship.Â
The City is advising its citizens that if they suspect a call is fraudulent or deceptive in nature, they should take the caller’s name and phone number, hang up and call McAllen Police Non-Emergency (956) 681-2000.
Representatives with the McAllen Marathon will never suggest that the customer make a payment immediately over the phone.
