McAllen, Texas – Over $300,000 in grant money will be presented to the Lower Rio Workforce Development Board in partnership with South Texas College and other organizations in the Rio Grande Valley Aug. 2, 2019.
Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) will award three separate grants all designed to bring education and training opportunities to the Rio Grande Valley.
A high demand job-training grant is an agreement between Workforce Solutions, South Texas College and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in the amount of $93,110. Through this grant, Workforce Solutions, STC’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, and the Edinburg EDC will provide training for 53 new and incumbent workers from businesses in Edinburg. Funding will be used to develop a first-of-its-kind maintenance program for biomedical equipment in the City of Edinburg.
Additionally a customized Certified Nursing Assistance Program will provide trainees who successfully complete the program with a Phlebotomy Certification from the National Health Care Association for Phlebotomy Technicians. Additional training areas include customer service and cybersecurity. Edinburg EDC has agreed to match funds for this grant totaling this initiative at $186,2200.56.
An Apprenticeship Texas Expansion grant (ATG) in the amount of $173,470.69 will provide support to workforce boards to engage local industry and workforce partners in developing and expanding new Registered Apprenticeship (RA) training programs and existing RA training programs. The grant was awarded to the Lower Rio Workforce Development Board in partnership with South Texas College for the college to develop four Registered Apprenticeship training programs for local employers including: auto service technicians, industrial maintenance, heating ventilation and air conditioning, and machinist.
STC serves as the RA sponsor and will be responsible for developing and providing curriculum to apprentices while engaging and expanding RA programs and services through employer engagement.
