EDINBURG – Texas Secretary of State David Whitley recently visited the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District and talked to students about the importance of registering to vote and civic engagement.
Secretary Whitley spoke to more than 300 Edinburg North High School students, teachers and administrators at the performing arts center.
“Think about what makes you tick,” Whitley said. “When you register to vote and get out to vote on May 4th, vote and honor what’s inside of you. Honor those values. Honor what makes you tick, because that is what is the most important thing that you can do to participate effectively in your democracy.”
As he passed out voter registration cards, Whitley encouraged students to register to vote when they turn 18 years old.
“I really want the students to find their passion,” Whitley said. “If they can think about what’s important to them in life, it will further motivate them to decide how they are going to vote later on.”
Commissioner Whitley also said that he wanted Edinburg students to learn about the importance of voting and to know that their votes do matter.
“There are elections all over the state of Texas that have been decided by fewer votes than there were people in that auditorium,” Whitley said. “I want them to know that their vote absolutely does count and that they need to get out there and participate.”
