The Weslaco Chamber of Commerce and Senior Casting Producer Kat Erangey from the hit NBC variety show America’s Got Talent is on the search for anyone who can eat a whole, unsliced onion in 90 seconds. Video auditions will be sent to America’s Got Talent producers to be considered for a spot to appear before the celebrity judges. This search is held in conjunction with Texas Onion Fest, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at Weslaco City Park.
“We’re so thrilled that we were contacted by America’s Got Talent,” remarked Martha Noell, Weslaco Chamber President/CEO. “The producers were specifically looking for an onion act and when they searched the web, our festival came up and they thought we were a good place to start.”
“ I’m so excited to team up with The Weslaco Chamber of Commerce to finally find the most entertaining ONION EATER or EATERS in America,” remarked Erangey.
“This is a perfect lead in to Texas Onion Fest,” added Noell. “We think it will definitely create some buzz for the event and possibly get someone local on national TV.”
The Weslaco Chamber will be filming contestants who want to be submitted for consideration at the monthly outdoor street festival Alfresco Weslaco Music & Art on the Street, which takes place on Thursday, March 19 in Downtown Weslaco. Those who can’t make it to Alfresco Weslaco will have the opportunity to record an attempt right after the Onion Eating Contest at Texas Onion Fest on Saturday, March 28. Interested individuals must submit name and contact info to laura@weslaco.com or call 956-968-2102 prior to either event.
The Texas Onion Fest celebrates the development of the world famous sweet Texas onion which was developed in Weslaco. The festival is just one of the many attractions Weslaco has to offer, and features live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, recipe contests, dancing horse show, and of course, the ever popular blooming onion. This year, a carnival has been added, and will run from Thursday, March 26 to Sunday, March 29.
