The Texas Association of Business is proud to echo Senator Ted Cruz’ recent declaration that the Lone Star State has proven itself to be a forerunner in yet another surprising sector – wind energy. Although Texas is predominantly known for being an oil and gas giant, it has emerged as a powerhouse in the realm of renewable energy, surpassing even California. In fact, a recent study revealed we have secured our position as the leading wind energy producer for the 17th consecutive year in a row.

The numbers don’t lie. In 2022 alone, Texas generated a staggering 114,000 megawatt hours of wind energy, dwarfing California’s output of 14,600 megawatt hours. The Lone Star State’s wind energy prowess is further underscored by its deployment of over 15,000 wind turbines, an impressive infrastructure that sets it apart on the national stage. Texas proactive stance has spurred innovation and investment in various renewable technologies, reflecting a holistic approach to sustainability.

Bipartisan support has played a pivotal role in Texas’s ascent to wind energy dominance. The Texas Renewable Portfolio Standard, initiated in 1999 by then-Governor George W. Bush, laid the groundwork for fostering renewable energy development. Governor Rick Perry continued this trajectory in 2005 by signing a bill that expanded renewable energy initiatives and enhanced the state’s electric transmission infrastructure. While political landscapes continue to evolve, it’s evident that Texas’s commitment to a diverse energy portfolio remains unwavering.

Texas’ claim to the title of the nation’s leading wind energy producer is not just a statistical triumph; it represents a visionary approach to energy diversification. As Texas continues to invest in renewable energy projects, it solidifies its position as a trailblazer in sustainable practices, reaping economic, environmental and energy security benefits for its residents and making a substantial contribution to the nation’s clean energy future.
