LAREDO, Texas – The Texas Border Coalition (TBC) today added its voice to those urging Congress to take action to protect hundreds of thousands of young people who entered the U.S. as children from deportation.
“TBC has long supported a permanent solution for ‘Dreamers’ in the U.S. under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and we support action to prevent the deportation of humanitarian refugees as well,” Laredo Mayor and TBC Chairman Pete Saenz said. “We strongly urge Congress to pass the Dream and Promise Act of 2019 now under consideration by the House of Representatives.”
The proposed legislation would grant individuals Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) – immigrants who have been admitted due to war or natural disaster in their home countries – the ability to apply for lawful permanent resident status and cancel removal proceedings if they have been in the U.S. for at least three years, were eligible for or had TPS or DED status in September 2016.
In addition, the bill would strengthen administrative and judicial review procedures for individuals denied benefits.
Saenz noted that “Dreamers” have passed background checks and received permission to live and work in the nation where they were raised as Americans. Several hundred are now serving in the U.S. armed forces.
“These young people know no other country as their home other than the U.S. and should be able to live without fear of deportation as long as they have not committed crimes,” Saenz said. “More important, U.S. taxpayers have helped educate ‘Dreamers’ from elementary through high school, giving all Americans a vested interest in their success in the workforce of tomorrow.”
