Tesla’s fully autonomous Robotaxi, known as the Cybercab, is not yet available for purchase, but the company is moving closer to making that a reality. A limited pilot service launched on June 22, 2025, in Austin, Texas, using modified Model Y vehicles with safety drivers on board. Participation is by invitation only, with a flat fare of $4.20 per ride within a geofenced area.
Unveiled in October 2024, the Cybercab is a two-passenger, steering wheel-free EV explicitly designed for autonomy. Tesla aims to begin production between 2026 and 2027, targeting a base price under $30,000. Pre-orders have not opened, but those interested can sign up for updates on Tesla’s Robotaxi website.
“This is not something you can buy today,” Tesla has stated. The current pilot is closely monitored by regulators, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), especially after early glitches, including lane drift and abrupt stops. Tesla’s reliance on camera-only navigation continues to draw scrutiny from the industry.
Eventually, Tesla plans to launch the Tesla Network, allowing owners of vehicles like the Model 3 or Y to earn income by sharing their self-driving cars. That feature, however, depends on the full release of Cybercab and further regulatory approvals.
For now, Tesla advises consumers to stay informed, sign up for updates, and watch for pilot expansion to cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco in late 2025. As Tesla puts it, “You can’t buy a Robotaxi yet—but that future is getting closer every day.”
