AUSTIN, Texas – Texas State Representative Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) was appointed by Texas Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows to serve as Chairman of the Texas House Committee on Transportation Funding. This key role will be critical in advancing transportation infrastructure in the rapidly growing Rio Grande Valley, where strategic investments in transportation are essential to economic development and quality of life. This will be Canales’ fourth session on the Transportation Committee, having previously served three sessions as its chair. “Being appointed as Chairman of the Texas House Committee on Transportation Funding is a tremendous honor, and I am deeply committed to ensuring that our transportation infrastructure meets the needs of the fast-growing communities in the Rio Grande Valley and across the state,” said Canales. “Having served three sessions as Chair of the Committee on Transportation, I have seen firsthand the impact of strong transportation investments on our economy, safety, and quality of life. This new responsibility will allow me to continue building on that progress, advocating for smart, sustainable funding that supports our future growth and enhances the mobility of Texans for generations to come.”
In addition to his role as Chairman of the Transportation Funding Committee, Rep. Canales was also appointed to the influential Texas House Committee on Calendars, which determines when and if bills will be heard on the House floor. This appointment gives the Rio Grande Valley a significant voice in the legislative process throughout the 89th Legislative Session. “Being appointed to the Texas House Committee on Calendars is an incredible opportunity to ensure that the voices of the Rio Grande Valley are heard on every key issue facing our state,” Canales said. “This committee plays a crucial role in shaping the legislative agenda, and I am committed to ensuring that our region has a seat at the table for all substantive legislation.”
The Speaker also appointed Canales to serve on the Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety, and Veterans’ Affairs, further recognizing the important role of the Rio Grande Valley in shaping statewide policy. “Thank you, Speaker Burrows, for these important committee appointments and for recognizing the importance of the Rio Grande Valley by giving our region’s legislators key appointments in the Texas House of Representatives,” Canales said. “It is an honor to serve on these committees in the 89th Session of the Texas Legislature, and I am excited to continue my work to help create a more prosperous future for my constituents.”
