Rio Grande Valley, Texas – With spring break just around the corner, students across Valley are preparing for a well-earned pause from their academic routines. This time away from the classroom offers a valuable opportunity to rest, reset, and re-energize for the final stretch of the school year.

Teach For America Rio Grande Valley, a local nonprofit dedicated to expanding educational opportunity for all children, is sharing tips to help students and families make the most of their break, returning refreshed, motivated, and ready to succeed.

  • Unplug and Stay Active. Spring break is a great time to step away from screens and reconnect with the world around you. Families are encouraged to explore local parks, walking trails, and community spaces, or try creative activities like journaling, photography, music, or crafting. Limiting screen time can help students recharge mentally and emotionally.
  • Prioritize Rest and Healthy Routines. Adequate sleep, balanced meals, and daily movement play a critical role in student well-being. Using the break to establish healthy habits can improve focus, energy, and confidence when school resumes.
  • Reflect, Set Goals, and Get Organized. Students can use this time to reflect on their progress, celebrate accomplishments, and identify areas for growth. Setting small goals, organizing school materials, or previewing upcoming assignments can help reduce stress later in the semester.
  • Explore Your Community and Beyond. Busy schedules often leave little time for exploration. Spring break is an ideal opportunity to visit nearby museums, cultural centers, libraries, or state parks. Day trips within the Valley community or to neighboring cities can offer meaningful learning experiences and family connection.
  • Give Back Through Service. Volunteering at local food banks, shelters, or community events can help students build empathy, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose, while making a positive impact close to home.

“The school year can be demanding for students and families alike,” said Ana D. González, executive director of Teach For America Rio Grande Valley. “We encourage families to view Spring Break as a time to reconnect, recharge, and refocus on well-being. These moments of rest and reflection help students return to school feeling confident and prepared for the final months ahead.”
