City of McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, District 4 Commissioner Rodolfo “Rudy” Castillo, District 6 Commissioner Pepe Cabeza de Vaca and McAllen City Manager, Isaac J. Tawil welcomed Tampico Mayor Monica Villarreal Anaya and a delegation of City of Tampico government officials at McAllen City Hall to formalize an intergovernmental partnership. The signing of a Friendship City accord aims to solidify the long history of collaboration between the two communities, particularly in environmental stewardship initiatives and programs to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.
A Friendship City Agreement is recognized as the first step towards a Sister City partnership that allows the development of initiatives benefiting the signing communities.
“Today’s signing will strengthen the collaboration with Tampico in different sectors, such as sustainability, trade and commerce, exchange of best practices, and cultural exchanges. This international agreement is a commitment to enhancing our cooperative connections in Tamaulipas,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.
Tampico is McAllen’s first Friendship City partner. McAllen has Sister City relationships with 14 cities worldwide. The City is increasingly engaging internationally to cultivate city-to-city relationships, spur economic growth, promote trade and commerce, foster cultural exchanges, and develop innovative projects with international stakeholders.
“The Friendship City Agreement lays the foundation for the next step in our intergovernmental relationship. We are certain that this collaboration will bring great benefits to our community. Tampico has created remarkable ecological programs that have inspired some city projects. As thriving communities, we also share goals in advancing economic development exchanges, investment opportunities, and facilitating trade and commerce through the economic landscape fostered in our city,” said City Manager Tawil.
