Kassie Zapata, a UTRGV junior from Donna, will be making her third appearance in Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Wednesday, July 4, at Coney Island, New York. The kinesiology major – ranked at No. 43 in the world by Major League Eating – will be competing for a third time in what has become one of the most unique annual sporting competitions in the world, as she once again faces off with the world’s top competitive eaters. UTRGV P-16 Outreach kicked off its Migrant University Summer Experience (MUSE) program in June with the students moving into UTRGV dorms. MUSE programs offers migrant students from across the Valley a chance to experience college life and further their education. UTRGV’s University Recreation (UREC) has been ranked in the Top 50 Best Campus Recreation Centers by CollegeConsensus.com. College and universities that make the list are ranked according to the individual College Consensus score, which is a combination of the results of reputable publisher ratings and student reviews. The UREC, which ranked 31 on the list, currently sees from 800 to 1,000 students per semester and provides services ranging from group exercises to aquatics to intramural sports. U.S. Chess Federation Names UTRGV ‘Chess College of the Year’ for...

UTRGV education students (from left) Jimena Gamboa of La Feria, Clarissa Rodriguez of Weslaco, Kasandra Salinas of La Feria, and Clarissa Guerra of Edinburg, are among the seven UTRGV students named recipients of the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers, under the Raise Your Hand Foundation. For this inaugural cohort, 100 students from 10 partnering universities in Texas were chosen from a pool of 350 candidates by means of a competitive selection process, which included a written application, interviews, group activities and demonstration of a teaching lesson. Each student receives an $8,000 scholarship each year for up to four years, as well as ongoing training, mentorship and networking opportunities facilitated by the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation.
