AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Association of Business (TAB) joined leading Texas business organizations in urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clear the agency’s massive backlog of Class VI well applications and accelerate Texas’ primacy application to ensure that our state continues to lead as the world’s largest energy producer. In a letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, TAB and its partners made clear that Texas is eager to deploy Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to preserve our state’s energy dominance, enhance our infrastructure and create American jobs.

TAB joined Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) President Todd Staples, Greater Houston Partnership (GHP) President & CEO Steve Kean, the Texas Association of Manufacturers (TAM) President & CEO Tony Bennett, Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) President & CEO Carlton Schwab, the Texas Chemistry Council (TCC) President & CEO Hector Rivero and the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region President & CEO Chad Burke in urging Zeldin to take action in order to unleash the full potential of American energy innovation:

“Texas is currently pursuing primacy, a process that began over two years ago. We request that the EPA expedite – and approve – Texas’ primacy application. By clearing out the massive backlog of Class VI applications and accelerating primacy for the states, the EPA can give industry the clear and predictable framework to do what it does best: invest in America…

The joint letter also underscores the economic and national security benefits of authorizing new CCS projects in Texas, including:

  • Creating 7,500 full-time American jobs in Texas, spanning across multiple disciplines including engineering, construction, and manufacturing.
  • Contributing $1.8 billion to the Texas economy through the construction of pipeline networks, storage facilities, and monitoring technologies – all of which are critical infrastructure to support America’s industrial competitive edge.
  • Strengthening American energy security, which is fundamentally reliant on the U.S.’ robust carbon capture network – a technology that has been successfully implemented in American oilfields for decades to enhance domestic energy production.

TAB and its partners are ready to work with the EPA and other federal agencies to ensure the Lone Star State fully leverages CCS technology and its potential to drive economic prosperity and security for future generations.
