LAREDO COLLEGE – Many Laredo College Palominos will soon have the honor to receive the recently established Sylvia Lorraine Hines Memorial Scholarship. Laredo College has accepted this generous donation from the Hines family to commemorate her legacy.

Sylvia Lorraine Hines was called to be with the lord this past December. She left relatives and friends to cherish her memory. She touched the lives of many students and professionals during her nearly three-decade career in education. The family has opted to honor Mrs. Hines’ lifelong passion for education by establishing the Sylvia Lorraine Hines Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship is open to students from all majors but aims to assist graduates that are planning to attend LC from Lyndon B. Johnson High School and United High School. These two institutions are where Mrs. Hines made the greatest impact during her career. A committee comprised of her family will announce the recipients selected each year.

“On behalf of the Hines family, I want to thank everyone who has reached out to us and offered their prayers, words of encouragement and support for our family during this difficult time,” Mrs. Hines’ son-in-law Michael Gonzalez said. “Although she is clearly missed by family and friends, Lorraine’s generous spirit and love for education will live on through this scholarship fund, paying tribute to her legacy as a lifelong educator that made a difference in the lives of generations of students in Laredo. We know that she will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of many students as she did throughout her life.”

LC joins the Hines family as they continue celebrate the legacy of Sylvia Lorraine Hines and will match this year’s contribution totaling $50,000 in scholarships for LC students. More than 25 Palominos will receive this assistance to pay for their academic needs and continue reaching their academic and career goals.

To positively impact the lives of many students at LC for years to come, the family invites those interested in honoring her legacy to contribute to this scholarship in an effort to continue to assist students as they continue their academic journey.
