McAllen, TEXAS – South Texas College is hosting a Spring College Fair to give current and prospective students information about transferring and admissions.
Representatives from 20 participating schools will be on hand, including four-year institutions such as the University of Texas Austin, Texas A&M College Station and many of the campuses within those systems.
STC will host three fairs, one on each of the Starr, Mid Valley and Pecan Campuses.
On Monday, Feb. 24 the fairs kick-off at the Pecan Campus inside the Student Union (Bldg. U) on the second floor 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
On Tuesday, students in Starr County will be visited by college representatives inside Bldg. E (South Academic) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Mid Valley fair will take place on Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bldg. G (North Academic).
“We’re one of the best-kept secrets here,” administrative assistant for University Relations, Transfer and Articulation Center Cordelia Shotts said. “We work really hard to enroll students and get them to stay and finish. One thing a lot of students have a mythology around is that transferring out of here is impossible, or it’s going to be complicated.”
Inside of the office, Shotts works alongside Director of University Relations, Transfer and Articulation Dr. Kelli Davis to ensure it’s a worthwhile journey student can handle.
“Our continuing mission is to improve social mobility in this community,” Shotts said. “What you’re starting now opens all kinds of doors to you. Whether it’s moving into a vocation, a technical skill or field or a bigger long-term degree like a master’s degree.”
Established partners like UTRGV and Texas A&M Kingsville will be on-site with information about courses and continuing education. Texas State, University of Houston system, Lamar University are just some of the colleges also represented.
“Building relationships with four-year institutions, guarantees our students have hands-on, boots on the ground people in front of them,” Shotts said.
The fairs are an opportunity not just for the students to see their potential next step in education but for university representatives to see the student body.
“The other thing that is good for us, is that institutions themselves get to see our students,” Shotts said. “This is super cool because we have some amazing students with a huge amount of potential.”
