RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX – Faculty and staff at ICI say student Victor Yañez is passionate about cooking, self-disciplined and always hard working. That is why the chefs have nominated him as their student of the month for September.

“Victor is always motivated to learn, and never misses a class,” said instructor chef Mariano.

Victor Yañez is 23 years old. He lived in Rio Bravo Tamaulipas before coming to the United States. When his family moved to the valley, both his parents worked, so he learned to cook at an early age. He cooked mostly for himself.  “If not, I would die of hunger,” he jokes.

When he was 16 he discovered he liked cooking. He decided to study culinary arts in order to achieve both his goals: traveling and preparing dishes from all over the world. He says this is the reason he decided to enroll at ICI. Victor said, “I have always wanted to travel, and cooking and traveling go hand in hand.”

When he finished High School he started to research colleges that would offer programs in Culinary Arts, but most of them were far from home. Then, he found ICI. The school was here in the valley, so he decided to go and see the campus.

Victor liked ICI’s three modern and fully equipped kitchens, and he also liked that classes were offered daily. “The kitchens are really well designed and fully equipped to learn everything,” he shared, “including all the equipment and utensils a chef would need for all kinds of techniques. I also like that classes are held every day.”

Victor offers this advice to those thinking about enrolling in a culinary program with ICI:

“They need to be determined (to learn) and never miss a class. Always pay attention to your instructors because they are very experienced. And, don’t forget, the kitchens are amazing!”

This is Victor’s second semester at ICI. He expects to graduate with his Certificate in Culinary Arts in December.
