RIO GRANDE VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday that the department’s 279 student-athletes posted a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) while 199 student-athletes are part of the Fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll by achieving a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 while serving as full-time students as part of a team during the fall semester.

As a whole, the department’s cumulative GPA now stands at 3.25 as well.

One hundred seventeen student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 to earn Dean’s List recognition, including 54 student-athletes that finished the semester with perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

“Our student-athletes continue to be a beacon of light as they embrace a new style of learning during this difficult time,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “Our young people put in a tremendous amount of work, and I couldn’t be prouder of what they accomplished.”

By percentage, 72.36% of student-athletes earned a spot on the AD Honor Roll; a record 42.55% earned Dean’s List recognition, and a record 19.64% recorded a 4.0 GPA.

Fourteen sport programs recorded team GPA’s above 3.0, led by men’s golf, which recorded a 3.70 GPA as all 10 of their student-athletes earned AD Honor Roll recognition, with a department-high 80% on the Dean’s List and a department-best 40% earning 4.0 GPA’s.

Volleyball led the way among women’s teams with a 3.65 GPA, as 92.86% of the team made the AD Honor Roll and 71.43% made the Dean’s List. Women’s basketball also had 92.86% of its team make the AD Honor Roll, while women’s tennis saw 38.46% of its student-athletes earn GPA’s of 4.0.

Baseball had the most student-athletes named to the AD Honor Roll and the Dean’s List with 37 and 22 respectively, while women’s track & field ranked second with 29 and 15, respectively.

The track & field teams also had the most 4.0 GPA’s, with the men’s team boasting 10 and the women’s team fielding seven. The baseball team also has seven student-athletes earn a 4.0 GPA.

Conque also commended UTRGV’s coaches and the Victory Center staff of dedicated academic advisors.

“Our team worked day and night to make sure our student-athletes, many of whom were on campus, but some of whom were spread out in different time zones across the globe, had everything they needed to succeed,” Conque said.
