Planning meeting set for Aug. 2-3 for new Holmes Cadet partnership

EDINBURG, TEXAS – JULY 28, 2016 – Students and instructors in the education track at South Texas Independent School District’s South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA) campus in Edinburg will meet Aug. 2 and 3 with representatives from the UTRGV College of Education to solidify the details of a new partnership.

Through this partnership, all BETA education students will have the opportunity to participate in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s (AACTE) Holmes Cadet Program beginning this fall. The program supports high school students interested in a career in teaching, school administration, or the professoriate. It is open to high school students from historically underrepresented groups pursuing a diploma or GED.

Although the Holmes Program traditionally has begun at the collegiate level, according to AACTE, it is expanding to support students earlier in their education. The partnership between UTRGV and BETA – one of the first of its kind in the nation – will provide high school students with access to mentorship, expanded educational resources and professional development opportunities, all beginning as early as freshman year.

At the inaugural meeting, BETA students will become more familiar with the program and will provide feedback to assist with design and development. Groups will brainstorm ideas for effective program activities, engaging with administrators, faculty and staff from BETA, STISD and UTRGV to determine the course of the partnership.
