RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Monday that junior right-hander Kevin Stevens of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team is the WAC Pitcher of the Week.
In his first career start, Stevens pitched five no-hit innings, striking out nine while allowing just one baserunner, which came on an error. Stevens retired the final 12 batters he faced as UTRGV beat Kansas State 5-0 in the season opener on Friday.
UTRGV is off to a 2-1 start after beat Kansas State on Saturday as well. This is the first time UTRGV has had multiple wins over the same Big 12 team in a season since 2000 when the team had three wins over Texas Tech and two over Texas A&M. The Vaqueros had three wins against three different Big 12 opponents last season and already have two wins over Big 12 competition after three games this season.
UTRGV looks for a series victory against Kansas State tonight at 7 p.m. during Friends and Family Night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
