McAllen, TX (October 22, 2015) – The South Texas College (STC) Kinesiology Department invites the public to run, walk or trot at their 10th Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 21, at the Cooper Center for Communication Arts located across from the Pecan Campus at 3200 W. Pecan in McAllen. The cost of admission is eight cans of non-perishable food that will be donated to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV).
The family-friendly Turkey Trot consists of a 2.2 mile closed course with registration starting at 6:30 a.m. and the actual race starting at 7:30 a.m. For the past ten years, the Turkey Trot has brought the community together with the goal of raising awareness for healthy lifestyles and to also give to others that are in need during the holiday season.
“Just in the last five years, our Turkey Trotters have contributed more than 8,000 pounds of food to help stock the Food Bank RGV’s pantry,” said Dr. Rebecca De Los Santos, chair of the Kinesiology Department at STC. “This year, we are trying to make that total reach 10,000 pounds. We appreciate everyone in the community who comes out early to support the Food Bank RGV and to have fun at the Turkey Trot.”
Participants are invited to take part in a dance and aerobic exercise warm-up before the race starts. In addition, free t-shirts and goodie bags will be given to the first 225 participants who register for the Turkey Trot. The top three runners in the Women’s and Men’s Divisions will take home a free, frozen turkey to enjoy during the holidays. Medals will also be given to the top ten men and women runners. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are also welcome to attend.
“We really want to mark our tenth year by hosting the largest Turkey Trot ever in order to support the Food Bank of the RGV,” said De Los Santos. “There has never been a monetary cost associated with the race. Rain or shine, this is all about coming together to support those in our own community.”
