MCALLEN, TEXAS – Millions in additional emergency aid is on the way for students enrolled this fall as part of CARES Act funds received from the Department of Education earlier this year, South Texas College announced Monday.

STC dispersed over $4.3 million in emergency aid to over 7,200 students in the spring semester due to the impact of COVID-19, and realizes that students need additional assistance during the fall term, according to top administrators with the college.

“We know our students need more help,” said Matthew Hebbard, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “We still have over $5 million remaining so we are getting the help to them at just the right time.”

Students who have already submitted a CARES Act application in the spring or fall will not need to reapply. Each qualifying student will receive a check for $600, according to Hebbard. In order to be considered, students must be enrolled at STC.  For new students seeking to apply, they must complete the process online as applications will not be available on-campus. On-campus services are very limited and by appointment only.

“We want to give out all of it fast so students get the cash help as they start the fall,” Hebbard said.

STC has already identified more than 5,700 students who are eligible, and will give out more than $3.4 million in emergency aid to students during the first week of class.

Students must meet CARES Act requirements and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). STC has also awarded over $700,000 in scholarships stemming from $1.2 million in CARES Act Scholarships funds for the fall.

Students only need to submit one application for emergency aid and scholarship programs. Students must apply to be considered, and the college will award funds on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds have been dispersed.
