McAllen, TX (November 15, 2017) – South Texas College will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting for its new Student Food Pantry on Thursday, Nov. 16.
The ribbon cutting will take place at the Pecan Campus Building H second floor in room H218 at 12p.m. A reception will follow in H216.
The food pantry has been established with the support of Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc. The current pantry is filled with non-perishable food items. STC plans to expand the food pantry services to the Mid-Valley and Starr County campuses for the 2018-2019 school year.
“Hunger in K-12 schools is a well-known issue,” said Paul Hernandez Jr., STC Dean of Student Affairs. “As a result, programs like free school breakfasts and lunches are offered in public schools but such programs do not often exist in post-secondary education.
“There is no reason that students should have to choose between their education and getting something to eat. They can and should have both,” Hernandez said.
