South Texas College has announced the launch of its new Professional Dog Grooming program, a hands-on course, set to start next month, designed to meet a growing industry demand while giving students the tools they need to turn their passion for pets into a career.

The program is led by STC’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development department in partnership with Showtime Pet Salon, a local business owned by Carmen Briseño.

The course combines online instruction with real-world experience to ensure students graduate with industry-recognized skills and a certification.

“There’s a clear need for professional, well-trained pet groomers in our region,” said Olivia de la Rosa, dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “This course not only helps fill that need, but also helps students with the option to either enter the workforce or start their own business.”

Students in the program will complete nearly 14 weeks and 180 hours of online instruction and hands-on training at Showtime Pet Salon. After completing the course, students will be eligible to take the American Kennel Club’s Professional Groomer Credential certification exam.

“This program isn’t just about learning how to groom,” said Briseño. “We’re teaching students the why behind the techniques, how to handle animals safely, communicate with clients and create a calm, caring environment for every pet.”

Briseño’s passion for the grooming industry is clear. After years of experience in both corporate and small business grooming environments, she founded her salon with a focus on education and ethical pet care.

“There are a lot of grooming shops out there, but not all of them offer the proper training,” she said. “What makes this program different is that we’re teaching students to understand behavior, safety and proper grooming. It’s more than just learning how to use clippers.”

The program cost $3,903, and includes all materials and equipment. Students may also qualify for financial aid.

De la Rosa encourages anyone interested, to apply as soon as possible.

“Space is limited and we don’t want anyone truly interested in this course to miss this opportunity,” she said“Registration and program information is available online and at our offices at STC’s Pecan Plaza. We’re excited about this program and what this means for pet enthusiasts and pet owners across the RGV.”
