From records and registration to the classroom, Sandra Moreno has had a successful two-decade career at South Texas College, and most recently, she has earned the title of assistant professor.

“I am beyond excited for this distinction,” said Moreno. “All my hard work has paid off…it’s so rewarding.”

As a faculty member teaching Psychological Science and as a first-generation student who went on to earn a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree, Moreno said she enjoys guiding students toward becoming lifelong learners.

“For me, it’s not about the title. My students are always my top priority,” she said. “But working toward this new academic classification opened doors of opportunity for me regarding professional development and research, all of which allow me to better serve my students. I love seeing them learn and interact. I want all my students to love learning.”

To earn the title of assistant professor, it took Moreno six months to compile and organize two years of documentation that focused on student survey responses, professional development, certifications, presentations conducted and research.

“A group of us in the department did this as a team,” said Moreno. “We supported and guided one another through the process and encouraged each other. It was a lot of work, but so worthwhile.”

Moreno added that she sees herself in many of her students, many of whom are active members in STC’s Ascender – Catch the Next program, which helps first-generation, minority and lower income students graduate from college and transfer to a university.

“I understand the financial burden and the stressors that come with being a first-generation student,” she said. “That is why I make it my responsibility to ensure that college isn’t intimidating; that I help them understand their educational and career choices and that I encourage them to continue their education. I am living proof that time and effort make all the difference.”

STC Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Science Liza Véliz said Moreno is a great asset to the department and the college.

“Dr. Moreno is a dedicated faculty member that teaches with empathy, passion and integrity,” said Véliz. “Students praise Dr. Moreno and their positive learning experiences in her classes speaking to the excitement she brings each day when speaking of psychology. She is known for her guidance, confidence building and the support she provides students for personal and academic success. Her contributions outside of the classroom also highlight her strengths as a faculty member.”

Building a positive rapport with her students is what Moreno said allows her to connect and help her students relate theories to their personal lives to become successful in whatever profession they may choose.

“The opportunities for our students are endless. They can work in anything from human resources and counseling to health care and neuroscience,” said Moreno. “I will continue to work on myself. My next stop is becoming a professor…all so I can continue to improve my courses and teach and prepare my students for their future.”
