MCALLEN, TX (November 17, 2016) – Throughout the spring and summer, students with STC’s Construction Supervision and Electrician Technology programs spent weekdays, evenings and weekends assisting with the construction of homes for families in need.
Now that construction has finished, South Texas College and Habitat for Humanity will join with families and volunteers for a special house dedication ceremony at 412 Blue Jay Drive in Alamo on Tuesday Nov. 22 at 10 a.m.
“With my background that I have had, and how I grew up, I think that’s truly what drives me. I didn’t grow up in a nice fancy home, I grew up in a colonia or barrio like you see here,” said Rey Sanchez, Design Building Technology Program Chair at South Texas College. “That’s my drive. I want to help others. That’s what we communicate to our students. We have to help the community as much as they can. This provides them with that skill, and it’s a learning process for something they will do for the rest of their lives.”
Students in those programs in turn received hands-on experience while becoming close to the people they served. Construction students work with various humanitarian groups including Habitat For Humanity, Proyecto Azteca and Buckner International during the construction process.
“It feels really good because there are lot of people who don’t have a home to go to,” said construction student Leeroy Ortiz. “I feel like I want to help them build that home. This is where we start. Basically, what you see us do in the field is what we love.”
