Visit Quinta Mazatlan on Thursday, January 15th at 6 pm to join Cliff Shackelford, state Ornithologist for Texas Parks & Wildlife.   Cliff’s humorous program will focus on the best colloquial bird names of the year!  What in the world is a “jug blower” or a “timberdoodle?”  Come listen for these and other colloquial names of birds found in Texas.

Cliff is the statewide Nongame Ornithologist for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department where he’s been employed since 1997.  He holds both a B.S. and an M.S. degree in biology from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.  Cliff has Adjunct Faculty status in the Department of Biology at Stephen F. Austin State University. Cliff is the first author of the book Hummingbirds of Texas available at Quinta Mazatlan’s gift store.  He also has authored nearly 70 publications on birds and birding with almost 20 of those appearing in peer-reviewed journals. Starting in 2013, Cliff started a new radio show called “Bird Calls” which airs on National Public Radio’s (NPR) Red River Radio (RRR) station which has the second largest coverage area of any NPR station in the country.  Cliff and his wife, also a biologist, and their two young children live in Nacogdoches.

The Nature Lecture series takes place on Thursday evenings through April 2015 and is proudly sponsored by Thurmond Eye Associates.  The program fee is $3 per person and no advance reservation is required.
