The Texas Capitol, Austin – This Friday, August 8, marks the beginning of this year’s Texas Sales Tax Holiday. The Sales Tax Holiday ends Sunday, August 10. As in past years, Texans who shop during this weekend will not have to pay state and local sales taxes on certain items.

“The Tax Holiday is just in time for the back-to-school season and provides an excellent boost to the economy. South Texas families have grown accustomed to this time of year to look for bargains and low prices on the supplies and clothes their children need for school, while the private sector competes for their business,” said Rep. Muñoz. “I urge every Texan to take advantage of this sales tax holiday to purchase much needed clothing, shoes and schools supplies needed for the start of another school year.”

The sales tax holiday exempts backpacks, paper, pens, pencils, and most school supplies. Clothing and footwear priced under $100 are also exempt. The Sales Tax Holiday will save hardworking Texans about $8 on every $100 they spend.

The sales tax holiday has become a “back to school” tradition in Texas for the past decade. The holiday is welcomed by consumers and businesses alike, and has consistently driven the state and local economies leading into the school year.
