Starr County, Texas (October 13, 2014) – Recognizing the significant impact the new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) will have in the region, the Starr County Industrial Foundation (SCIF) will host a welcome reception for its founding president Dr. Guy Bailey, this Wednesday. Starr County has always been a great advocate and supporter of education and the power it has to transform lives. This event will serve as an opportunity for Dr. Bailey to meet with the Starr County business community, local officials, South Texas College (STC) representatives, alumni and future students.

“Our residents are excited about this new phase for the Valley and Starr County. Our human assets are immense and we know we can contribute to continuing to make this university a success,” expressed Starr County Judge Eloy Vera. “We believe that what is good for the Valley is good for Starr County.”

One of the driving forces of change in this community has been South Texas College,  as it has been part of every partnership that has helped transform this area. “This remarkable growth and our continued collaboration with UTRGV will yield generations of new leaders and prosperity for STC and Starr County,” expressed Rose Benavidez who serves on the STC Board representing Starr County. “We are looking forward to sharing with Dr. Bailey a glimpse of our community and reinforce our commitment to higher education.”

At the event there will also be a special recognition for 2006 Roma High School graduate Esteban Reyes. Through the GEAR UP program Esteban was able to attend the University Of Texas Pan American (UTPA) and was well on his way to receiving a degree in mechanical engineering and being the first in his family to graduate from college. Unfortunately, an incapacitating automobile accident left him unable to continue his education and prevented him from realizing his dream. UTPA President Dr. Havidan Rodriguez will take this opportunity to present Esteban with a special recognition that will help fulfill Esteban and his family’s aspiration of being a college graduate.
