Nov. 19, 2024 – Under the leadership of Elon Musk, SpaceX successfully launched its groundbreaking Starship rocket system from Boca Chica, Texas, advancing its ambitious spaceflight objectives. The test flight, a key milestone for the company, was observed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, highlighting a growing alliance between Musk and the incoming administration.

The 400-foot-tall Starship rocket, designed for missions to land astronauts on the moon and eventually ferry crews to Mars, lifted off at 4 p.m. CT (2200 GMT). While the mission demonstrated significant progress, an attempt to recover the rocket’s Super Heavy booster fell short of expectations.

Super Heavy, the rocket’s 233-foot-tall first-stage booster, successfully separated from the second-stage Starship at approximately 40 miles (62 km). However, instead of returning to the launch tower for a catch-landing using massive mechanical arms, the booster splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico.

Despite the unexpected failure with the booster, the rest of the mission proceeded as planned. The Starship craft continued into orbit, completing a successful splashdown in the Indian Ocean roughly an hour after launch. In a critical milestone, Starship reignited one of its onboard engines in space for the first time, demonstrating enhanced maneuverability—a capability SpaceX had previously struggled to achieve. The accomplishment reflects SpaceX’s growing technical proficiency in reusable spaceflight technologies.

President-elect Donald Trump attended the launch alongside prominent Republican senators, including Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Kevin Cramer (R-ND). Before the event, Trump expressed his enthusiasm on social media, writing, “I’m heading to the Great State of Texas to watch the launch of the largest object ever to be elevated, not only to Space but simply by lifting off the ground. Good luck to Elon Musk and the Great Patriots involved in this incredible project!

Musk highlighted the test flight’s significance, describing it as a critical step in refining thousands of design elements and achieving four core objectives: reigniting Starship’s engine in space, improving heat resistance during reentry, conducting visible daytime landings, and enhancing booster recovery speed.
