Austin, TX – Students at Southern Careers Institute (SCI) can begin applying for federal grant money received by the school from the CARES Act. SCI has more than $3 million available for need-based grants that can be used for education essentials, food, and housing. In total, the school received $6,305,240 from the federal relief program to help students facing economic hardship and improve online and distance learning functionality. The funds will also allow SCI to enhance its online instruction capabilities so students can continue focusing on their education while maintaining safe social distancing protocols. Any money not used will be returned to the government so it can be reassigned to help other schools and students who are impacted.

“While there is so much going on in the outside world, we want our students to have the freedom to focus on their education,” Jacob Mayhew, CEO of SCI. “This grant money will help alleviate some of the financial pressures our students are facing and enable SCI to invest further in state-of-the-art classrooms and programs that will be accessible both in-person and online.”

Many of SCI’s programs have been deemed essential in their communities, and the money from the CARES Act will be used to improve the school’s online capabilities to better facilitate distance learning and a “no-touch” environment to keep campus communities safe. Classrooms will be upgraded with technology that will allow instructors to more easily teach in the virtual space. SCI will purchase laptops and invest in virtual simulations so that it can limit the number of people in the practice labs without hampering valuable hands-on training. The school is committed to innovating new ways to improve teaching and learning options due to COVID-19 to ensure alignment with new social distancing guidelines.

“We are grateful to the federal government and the CARES ACT for granting SCI these funds to help improve our students’ educational experience and keep them motivated to advance their education during these unprecedented times,” said Nikki England, President of SCI. “We intend to use it wisely, and conservatively in ways that will benefit as many of our students as possible.”

SCI students can apply for the CARES grant money by filling out an application by May 15.
