South Texas College Theatre goes into the wild with The Jungle Book
McAllen, TX (November 8, 2016) – South Texas College Theatre enters the wilderness with their November 2016 production of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, adapted by Greg Banks, which will run from Nov 17-19 at 8 p.m.. There will also be a Sunday matinee on Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts Main Stage, located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.
In this new adaptation of the beloved Rudyard Kipling story, a child lost in the jungle is adopted by Baloo the Bear, Bagheera the panther, and all the beasts who call the mysterious wilderness home. In this fast-paced retelling, the rambunctious and curious Mowgli comes face-to-face with sneaky monkeys, noisy vultures, and the tiger Shere Khan; his mortal enemy.
“The Jungle Book has always been one of my favorite childhood stories,” says Jungle Book Director Joel Jason Rodriguez. “I think one of the reasons I still enjoy this story so much has to do with the message it has about the family we have and create. There is a familial bond which unites Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and the wolves in a way that is authentic and loving. I also appreciate its theme about children maturing into young adults and how they adapt and react to their ever changing world.”
This production also received a special contribution from Valley Plastics and Paper Recycling. “We are very grateful for Valley Plastics contribution. When we began discussing how we would create Mowgli’s world, we decided to approach the production’s design with the idea of using recycled or repurposed materials to create the set and costumes. We didn’t want to paint over the materials because we wanted the audience to see our creations in their original state. It’s an imaginative and daring approach we chose and it has been a wonderful learning experience for our students,” says Jungle Book Director Joel Jason Rodriguez.
General admission tickets cost $10. Student, faculty, military, and senior citizen are $5. November 20, matinee production will be interpreted in American Sign Language.
