Graciela Farias, STC Board of Trustees Vice Chair, says:

“We all acknowledge that a better educated workforce translates into stronger and more vibrant communities. The 2013 bond issue provided STC the opportunity to dedicate $1.6 million for construction and renovation of the Higher Education Center. We are very appreciative for the great support and the $400,000 that LJISD also contributed toward the renovation and construction of these facilities.”

“Students who take advantage of these facilities will benefit from the state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, and will acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them further pursue higher education or gain workforce skills so they may prosper in future careers,” said Farias. “We encourage community members to visit these facilities and to imagine the possibilities.”

The new facilities will come equipped with upgraded science labs, lecture classrooms and computer labs to support STEM programs. Additionally, an outdoor welding lab has been constructed that will provide 42 stations for students, and will provide state-of-the-art workforce preparation for high-wage careers in welding.

Dr. Alda T. Benavides, LJISD Superintendent, believes that the alliance with STC has contributed to the success of students.  “The partnership with STC has definitely helped our students get ahead and get a feel for college life, but most importantly it affirms to them that they can do it,” said Benavides. “This alone is a great accomplishment.”
