McAllen, Texas – South Texas College began the semester with a surge in student enrollment as current numbers have surpassed 32,000, but are not official until the college’s census day Sept. 12, 2018.

Census Day refers to the time of year when the U.S. Department of Education requires schools to document students who are in attendance to finalize their Federal Pell Grant eligibility. South Texas College documents attendance for Federal Pell Grant purposes by collecting on-line rosters from all instructors before census day.

With brand-new facilities and state-of-the-art classrooms, STC has expanded to serve many more students in all campuses and locations.

“We are very proud of our new facilities because everything has been designed with the student at the forefront,” said Matthew Hebbard, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
“We also have redesigned the enrollment process and now provide one-stop enrollment centers where students can complete the enrollment process quickly without the long lines.

“We have world-class faculty focused on teaching and learning, small class sizes, and provide many support services to ensure our students stay on the path to a college degree,” Hebbard said.

STC offers high-skilled technical programs that prepare students for the workforce.  These programs are excellent for students who want an affordable option and a meaningful career. The college also provides university-bound students with the first two years of academic courses they need at half the cost of a university and affordable bachelor degree options.

One of the most in-demand programs is the Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership, a competency-based program that is self-paced and offered at a flat-rate tuition.

According to current numbers, the number of transfer students is far outpacing 2017, and STC is seeing slight gains in the number of returning students.

“Many students choose us because we provide the same courses at a much lower cost but with personalized attention from faculty and staff,” said Hebbard.  “Sometimes students find the university a bit too impersonal and overwhelming.

“Students and parents know the cost-savings compared to the university and they find the encouragement and support they need from our faculty,” said Hebbard.  “We also find that many students in our region have college hours but have not completed their degrees. We can help these students build an individualized plan so that they can reach their goal of a college degree.”

Transfer students who are interested can stop by at any of the campus locations with their university transcripts, and friendly staff will help them with the application process, transfer evaluation and advisement.  For more information, call 1-855-GoToSTC or visit the homepage at https://studentservices.southtexascollege.edu
