McAllen, TX (December 8, 2014) – History is being made at South Texas College as the institution prepares for its first ever December Commencement Ceremony at the McAllen Convention Center on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. More than 1500 students are eligible to don caps and gowns and participate in this important ceremony that celebrates their accomplishments as they either transition into the workforce or continue pursuing their higher education.

“Due to our enrollment growth and the record number of students completing their certificates, associate and bachelor degrees, it was just a matter of time before we had to add a December Commencement in addition to the ceremonies held in spring,” said STC Dean of Enrollment Services & Registrar Matthew Hebbard. “It is important that every student at South Texas College has the opportunity to participate in commencement and experience receiving their diploma.”

Since first opening its doors in 1993, South Texas College has seen steady growth in its student enrollment starting with 1,058 students to over 31,000 students this fall 2014. It is projected that enrollment will reach more than 42,000 by 2020. The college is a traditional Hispanic Servicing Institution (HSI) with a student body that is 95 percent Hispanic and 70 percent that are the first in their families to attend a higher learning institution.

Additionally, South Texas College is one of only three community colleges in the state of Texas accredited to offer applied baccalaureate degrees.
