South Texas College continues high national rankings in awarding associate and bachelor degrees to Hispanics

McAllen, TX (November 11, 2014) – Diverse Issues In Higher Education (Diverse), a newsmagazine focused on matters of access and opportunity for all in higher education, recently ranked South Texas College as No. 4 in the nation in awarding associate degrees across all disciplines to Hispanics. This is the second year South Texas College has held this ranking in Diverse’s “Top 100 Degree Producers” report.

Included in the report were rankings based on academic disciplines. South Texas College was ranked No. 1 nationwide in associate degrees awarded to Hispanics in Business, Education and Psychology. In addition South Texas College was ranked No. 2 in associate degrees awarded to Hispanics in Law Enforcement, Firefighting, Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies and Public Administration. Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing represented a 50% increase from the previous year’s report and ranked No. 3 in associate degrees awarded to Hispanics nationwide.

Furthermore, South Texas College ranked No. 10 nationwide in bachelor degrees awarded to Hispanics in Health and Medical Administrative Services with a 100% graduation rate.

“All of us at South Texas College have high expectations of success for our students and are committed to creating a “college-going culture” in the Valley whereby college is affordable and possible for all,” said South Texas College President Dr. Shirley A. Reed.

“South Texas College leads the nation in exemplary success with Hispanic students. Not only is our institution providing never before imagined access to higher education, we are now leading the state and nation in the success of Hispanic students. UTPA’s fall 2014 undergraduate enrollment was 17,868, with 64% or 11,340 of those students previously attending South Texas College. Additionally, of the 3,364 UTPA fall 2014 entering freshmen, 67% or 2,260 were South Texas College dual enrollment students,” Reed explained.

In addition to the previously mentioned rankings, South Texas College held high nationwide rankings in associate degrees awarded to Hispanics in the following academic disciplines:

 

  • 7 – Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services: 91% graduated
  • 7 – Health Professions and Related Programs: 88% graduated
  • 8 – Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services: 90% graduated
  • 8 – Visual and Performing Arts: 94% graduated
