EDINBURG, Texas – Commissioner Ellie Torres and the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District (ECISD) officials, students and residents in the Carmen Avila Elementary School and Harwell Middle School celebrated the completion of a new sidewalk that was much needed in the area.

Many gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 18th, to celebrate the completed construction. Commissioner Ellie Torres said the sidewalk project was brought to her attention by a developer working in the area who was concerned with the safety and crossing of students.  Commissioner Torres immediately assessed the situation and agreed to evaluate the feasibility for all safety concerns.  Via the Precinct, a traffic study was conducted, and the conclusions warranted areas to address that included a sidewalk, crosswalk and other pavement markings, stop signs and a blinking light. This led to a partnership with ECISD who provided support and funding towards the sidewalk project. All the other safety items identified in the study are being addressed by Precinct 4.

“Providing our students and residents with safety is of great importance to me,” Torres explained. “Now, the students and residents can use the sidewalk for safer walking, bicycling and jogging. I thank ECISD officials for collaborating with me.”  Torres said the project was designed by the Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 and constructed by Texas Cordia Construction.
