RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – OCT. 23, 2017 – For Faraón Torres Lazos, an alumnus of UTRGV legacy institution UT Pan American, dreaming big led to a successful career with Boeing, and now has earned him the STAR Promising Engineer Award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
Torres Lazos, an engineer with Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial and military aircrafts, will accept the honor during the SHPE National Conference, Nov. 1-5 in Kansas City, Missouri. The STAR awards recognize and honor the contributions of SHPE members and Hispanic organizations to the STEM fields.
Torres Lazos, who grew up in Rio Grande City, attributes much of his success to the help he received along the way.
“I feel honored for the extraordinary recognition,” he said. “I owe it to the support and mentoring of many people who believed in me, particularly my family.”
Torres Lazos, who earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 2010, said he is grateful for the knowledge and experience he gained during his time at UTPA.
His advice for future engineers hoping to reach the same level of success is to keep dreaming big.
“Set reasonable goals for yourself,” he said. “The goals may change, but gradually achieving them will give you the confidence that you need to grow.”
The 2017 winners will be celebrated at the STAR Awards Gala.
