Shot put records shattered as UTRGV Track & Field posts big results at Aggie Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – The program records in the women’s and men’s shot puts fell as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams made 10 entries in the record book on Saturday at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center.

Sophomore Samariae Bonds won the women’s shot put with a mark of 15.98 meters, surpassing the program record by 0.37 meters, setting a new personal record by 0.67 meters, and beating the next closest competitor by 0.56 meters. Sophomore Alexandrea Hurst, who broke the program record last week, came in fourth with a distance of 14.78 meters, the eighth-best in program history.

Bonds added the second-best weight throw in program history with a personal record mark of 18.95 meters to come in second.

Senior Paul May broke his own program record in the men’s shot put with a mark of 17.68 meters, 0.23 meters ahead of the previous record and 1.21 meters than the closest competitor. May had a big showing in the weight throw as well, coming in second with a personal record mark of 18.46 meters, the second-best in program history.

Sophomore Kyra Keurentjes recorded the second-fastest 800-meter run in program history, finishing fourth with a time of 2:14.52.

Senior Idatonye Cheetham-West placed second in the long jump with the sixth-best mark in program history, coming in at 5.86 meters.

Freshman Mystique Brown recorded the 10th-fastest 200-meter dash in program history for the second week in a row, coming in fifth with a personal record time of 25:19.

Sophomore Mariano Hernandez posted the 10th-fastest 200-meter dash in program history with a personal record time of 22.24, good for 12th place.

Both teams came in fourth, behind Texas A&M, Baylor and Missouri.

UTRGV is back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Houston Invitational.
