Sepulveda Earns WAC Baseball Player of the Week Honors

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Monday that postbaccalaureate student shortstop Christian Sepulveda of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team is the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Hitter of the Week for his efforts in UTRGV’s win at Washington and four-game sweep of Northern Illinois last week.

While helping the Vaqueros to a five-game winning streak, Sepulveda hit a team-best .467 (7-for-15) with one home run, five RBI and six runs scored. He also walked three times and was plunked twice for a .600 on-base percentage.

In Friday’s series opener against Northern Illinois, Sepulveda came to the plate with his team down 1-0 and two on and two out in the second and launched a three-run home run to ignite the Vaqueros offense.

Sepulveda is currently riding a five-game hitting streak and a 17-game on-base streak dating back to last season.

For the season, Sepulveda is hitting .424 (14-for-33) with three doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored in 11 games. He has a .524 on-base percentage and a .697 slugging percentage. He ranks 69th in the NCAA and first in the WAC in runs scored, 112th in the NCAA and third in the WAC in hitting, 115th in the NCAA and second in the WAC in RBI, 119th in the NCAA and third in the WAC in on-base percentage, 138th in the NCAA and fourth in the WAC in hits, and 141st in the NCAA and second in the WAC in slugging.

UTRGV is off to a 7-4 start and opens WAC play on Friday at 7 p.m. at Grand Canyon on the WAC Digital Network.
