EDINBURG – With only 42 days left until the November 2019 elections, Commissioners Court declared September as Valley Voter Awareness Month to encourage voter registration, voter education, and the importance of voting.
Hidalgo County Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon reported that voter registration has been steadily increasing and thanked Voter Registration Manager Belinda Sagredo, who is the longest-serving elections department worker.
“Belinda and her staff are responsible for the increase in voter registrations but it is not enough to register,” Ramon said. “I was at an event today with over 5,000 18-year-olds representing 10 school districts and that is one of the things I stressed.”
Ramon added that she focused on registering to vote and then following up with going to the polls to vote.
“More than that, I asked them to be informed about what is on the ballot,” Ramon added.
According to the Elections Department, the county has more than 370,600 registered voters. The Elections Department has registered 12,000 new voters since January. This increase proves that there is a continuing need to work together as a community to increase participation in the electoral process in Hidalgo County and the Rio Grande Valley.
