RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – 2016 – Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa will present a check for $50,000 to UTRGV administration to support his endowment at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

“The Cotton Fields of Penitas” Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa Endowed Scholarship supports first-generation college students pursuing degrees in all majors at UTRGV.

Hinojosa has a deep commitment to higher education. He said he understands the struggles students face to complete their education, and believes in giving back to support the students of his district. The eldest of eight children, he attended Mission schools as a child and worked as a farmworker during his teen years.

Hinojosa has said he would not be where he is without an education. He graduated with honors from The University of Texas-Pan American with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and went on to receive his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., after serving in the U. S. Marine Corps in Vietnam.

In lieu of holding a “Governor for a Day” ceremony while he served as the Senate’s President ProTempore this past 84th legislative session, Sen. Hinojosa reached out statewide through letters and phone calls to supporters and friends to fund a campaign for endowed scholarships supporting students attending colleges and universities in his legislative district.
