Event: The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros has issued a renewed security alert for all U.S. citizens regarding ongoing organized kidnappings for ransom occurring on intercity buses operated by Omnibus, departing from Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The Department of State’s Travel Advisory for Tamaulipas remains at Level 4 – Do Not Travel due to crime and kidnapping.
On June 14, 2024, an initial alert was sent by the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros. The situation remains critical, leading to this renewed warning on July 11, 2024. These kidnappings have predominantly taken place in the evenings, targeting buses departing south from the main Reynosa bus terminal. Kidnappers are specifically targeting passengers with connections to the United States, including U.S. citizens and residents. Victims have reported that their belongings and documents are stolen, bank accounts are emptied, and families are forced to pay ransoms amounting to thousands of dollars for each victim.
