BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Kindergarten teacher, Keila Benavidez, at IDEA Brownsville Academy received a surprise classroom library makeover after being selected by Scholastic for a special holiday giveaway. When students returned from lunch on Tuesday, December 16, Ms. Benavidez walked into a fully transformed classroom—complete with new books, shelves, and reading space—celebrating literacy and the joy of reading.

As part of a Scholastic giveaway open to all IDEA K–2 teachers, one teacher was drawn from those who completed a survey focused on classroom libraries and read-aloud practices. Ms. Benavidez’s classroom received brand-new shelves, books, bins, a carpet, and other materials to create an engaging classroom library designed to foster a love of reading.

“Ms. Benavidez had grown tremendously over the past couple of years, and in her classroom, you could feel the joy and excitement she brought to learning every day,” said Luz Zuniga, principal of IDEA Brownsville Academy. “This new classroom library helped her create an even more welcoming space that sparked a love of reading in her students.”
