EDINBURG – Hidalgo County officials are warning the public of a telephone scam in which callers identify themselves as members of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department and claims that the County Judge has issued an arrest warrant for the person answering the phone.

The caller provides fictitious case numbers and then claims that the caller can settle the issue and have the warrant dropped if the recipient of the call pays a sum of money over the phone.

The Hidalgo County Judge’s Office and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department along with other Hidalgo County law enforcement entities do not settle arrest warrants over the phone and both agencies are warning the public that these calls are part of an ongoing criminal enterprise.
