SAN JUAN – A San Juan man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child. Luis Martin Ortiz, 36, plead guilty to one count of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and one count of Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact, announced Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios.

Ortiz entered the guilty plea on June 24, 2024 and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in the institutional division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice by 370th District Court Judge Noe Gonzalez.

On October 28, 2021, officials at a local school notified the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office that a minor female had made an outcry of sexual abuse against Ortiz. The child reported having been sexually abused for a span of eight years beginning at the age of 6-years-old. Throughout the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Ortiz had also sexually abused another child. The second child reported that Ortiz had sexually abused her when she was 7-years-old. The children were interviewed by a forensic interviewer and underwent a sexual assault examination where they made consistent outcries detailing the sexual abuse by Ortiz that occurred within a residence in San Juan.

“Ortiz subjected innocent children to unimaginable horrors and deserves the harsh punishment that was imposed on him,” said Palacios. “I urge members of the community to remain vigilant and report any incident to law enforcement when you suspect a child may be in danger.”

The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Laura Rodriguez.
