As reported by MySA, hundreds of frustrated and concerned parents are pushing back against the North East Independent School District’s (NEISD) plan to consolidate three campuses due to declining enrollment. The district, which formally announced the option in December, has been hosting community meetings to discuss the move’s potential impact.
For the 2025-2026 school year, Wilshire Elementary, Clear Spring Elementary, and Driscoll Middle School have been identified for consolidation. NEISD Superintendent Dr. Sean Maika stated that his decision was based on a review of several factors, including enrollment numbers, cost efficiency, and facility conditions.
Declining Enrollment and Budget Constraints
According to MySA, NEISD’s enrollment has been steadily dropping for over a decade, with a 17% decrease since the 2014-2015 school year. This decline and financial pressures have led the district to seek $10 million in annual budget savings for the next three years.
A Long-Range Efficiency Committee, comprised of parents, community members, and staff, analyzed district data and recommended consolidating schools operating at low capacity. Driscoll Middle School, for example, currently serves 534 students despite having space for 1,410.
