McAllen, Texas — For the fourth consecutive year, the Environmental Awareness Club at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley among other organizations will be leading the RGV Climate March in downtown McAllen.

In previous years, the march would take place in November, but from 2018 on it will happen in late April to align better with other demonstrations such as Earth Day and The Peoples Climate March in New York City.

The demonstration will address environmental issues that affect the entire world but focus on the issues that affect the Rio Grande Valley specifically. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and the construction of the Border Wall are a couple examples.

“We need to stand up to defend our community against these injustices happening to us from our quality of air to our source of food and clean water,” said Suzanne El-Haj, co-president of the Environmental Awareness Club. “The Earth doesn’t need us to survive, we need it.”

The march will begin at McAllen City Hall Saturday, April 28th at 2 p.m. where participants will congregate, distribute posters, recite chants and hear an opening statement from organizers.

Participants will then march to Archer Park, where they’ll be met by more speakers, live music and more. The march is family friendly community event.
