EDINBURG, Texas – Border Patrol agents seize marijuana and large amounts of Xanax in separate smuggling events.

Yesterday afternoon, a Toyota Camry approached the primary inspection lane of the Javier Vega, Jr. Checkpoint near Sarita, Texas, where a service K-9 alerted to the vehicle. Upon further examination in the secondary inspection area, four bundles containing more than 3,500 Xanax pills were discovered. The estimated illicit street value of the pills are $35K.

The narcotics, vehicle and driver were turned over to the Kenedy County Sheriff’s Office.

Later that day, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Rio Grande City station’s ATV Unit working near La Grulla, Texas, seized three bundles of marijuana, weighing 106 lbs., with an estimated value of $85K. The smugglers fled back to Mexico.

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
