EDINBURG, Texas – Border Patrol Agents seized more than 1,830 pounds of marijuana in seven unsuccessful smuggling attempts.
On Wednesday, Fort Brown agents working in Brownsville, Texas, received information of four suspected drug smugglers attempting to scale the nearby border wall. The smugglers dropped the bundles and fled to Mexico upon seeing the responding agents. A search of the area led to the discovery of more than 115 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $92K.
On Thursday, agents from the Rio Grande City station observed a subject attempting to conceal a bundle of suspected narcotics in the brush after crossing the Rio Grande. A search of the brush yielded five bundles of marijuana weighing more than 233 pounds and worth an estimated $187K. Agents searched the area for the smuggler and additional narcotics to no avail.
A few hours later, McAllen agents working near La Joya, Texas, observed two smugglers walking north of the Rio Grande. As the agents responded to the area, the smugglers abandoned the marijuana bundles and fled to Mexico. The marijuana weighed over 90 pounds worth an estimated $72K.
On Sunday, Rio Grande City agents working near Garceno, Texas, observed a vehicle travelling north at a high rate of speed north of the Rio Grande. As agents arrived, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. Agents secured the vehicle and discovered more than 433 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $346K. A search of the area for the driver was unsuccessful.
Additionally, since Thursday, agents seized more than 1,030 pounds of marijuana in three separate incidents. The marijuana has an estimated worth of $825K.
